Our story begins three years ago. Trevor had a challenge, as a Scrum Master he wanted to show—rather than just tell—why diverse, cross-functional teams outperform siloed ones. He reached out to Jake with an idea: What if they could create a hands-on experience that made this lesson undeniable?
The two of them got to work, crafting a scenario inspired by tabletop games and adult learning theories. The premise was simple yet powerful: a team needed to cross a bridge to reach their goal. But there was a catch—a towering, 20-foot troll stood in their way.
In one version of the scenario, the team had a mix of roles—a cunning rogue, a brave knight, a wise wizard—each with unique abilities to navigate the challenge creatively. In another, the team was made up entirely of knights, limited to one skill: battle. The outcome? Teams with diverse skill sets consistently found smarter, more effective ways to overcome the obstacle. What started as a short exercise for Trevor’s teams quickly proved to be something more. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Fast forward three years, and we realized we weren’t just running a quick Scrum demonstration—we had the foundation for something much bigger.
That’s when NorthStar Team Building was born.
